Vegetable seed production in Denmark anno 2007...

In January 2007 the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Aarhus University hosted a Plant Congress in Denmark, covering many topics in the field of modern plant production. Dæhnfeldt was invited to speak at this congress, and in this newsletter you will find the presentation in brief.

Spinach seed production
The acreage of seed production of vegetable seed has been increasing tremendously the last few years, and it is at 4 times the level of 15 years ago. This growth is due to an increase in the spinach seed production, whereas the production of the remaining 20 species is quite stable.
In 2006 the acreage of spinach seed production in Denmark was appr. 5.650 ha, which is equal to appr. 75% of the world’s total production of hybrid spinach seed.

Denmark is the best location for producing spinach seed, primarily due to the favourable and unique climate, with long periods of day light in the growing period, which is a condition of bolting in the late maturing varieties. Secondly, in Denmark we have very good soil conditions, as well as skilled and experienced growers.

Perfect nick in spinach

Danish farmers are capable of producing spinach crops with high yields, good qualities and competitive prices, which ensures that production stays in Denmark. The remaining spinach seed production takes place in Washington State (US), China, France, New Zealand and Chile, as well as smaller productions located in Sweden and Germany.

The division of spinach seed production worldwide (ha)

The demand for spinach seed has been increasing a lot lately due to several circumstances, including the fast developing economics in the Far East, particularly in China. But also in the western part of the world there is an increasing demand, due the fact that the baby-leaf production method is gaining market. Eating delicious small leaves of spinach alone, or in salad mixes, is an American trend that has been spreading very fast to the remaining part of the western world.

Seed production of the remaining vegetable species
In 2006 the total seed production of the remaining 20 different vegetable species in Denmark was appr. 915 ha. Production of edible chrysanthemum, chinese cabbage and scorzonera covered half of this acreage, followed by white cabbage and cress, and a range of herb species, chives, rucola, parsley, chervil, thyme and sage. But also other species like radish, cauliflower and swiss chard are grown for seed on smaller acreages in Denmark. Over the years there has been a displacement between the species, but the total acreage has remained constant.

Conclusion
All signs point to the fact that the acreage for seed production of vegetable seed will be increasing over the coming years, and it will continue to be spinach “that will do the hard work”. However, there is a limit for the acreage, since spinach is a wind pollinator and an isolation of 2.000 m between each variety is necessary. Today, more than 175 different spinach varieties are produced here and the climate/soil is not suitable for seed production in the whole country. In the future it will be a challenge to ensure the best isolations to be able to maintain Denmark as the world’s best production location for spinach seed!
